2018 Tour – Part 1

At last we have commenced our 2018 Tour. This post is a brief update on our travels to get us to the point of where the real start of this year adventure begins. Let me explain:

The basic plan for this year is to head north as far as we can go (Cape York) then head west until we decide to head south arriving home after 4 months. So as you can see a fairly rigid and extensive itinerary. However there are some must do’s.

  1. Our travelling companions (Harold and Di) needed to pick up their new Super Camper from the manufacturer in Maroochydore,
  2. We wanted to catch up with our family (Grandkids in particular) in Canberra.
  3. We were also intent on chilling out in a lovely spot in the northern NSW coast, Brooms Head, as it has many fond memories of hanging out there with my brother and his wife from Brisbane. (Rod has now passed on).
  4. Drop into Brisbane and visit my brothers widow.

We left home on Friday the 18th May, around a week before Harold and Di  and spent the weekend in Canberra. Monday morning we decided to go inland then travel up the western side of the great divide meandering in and out of the high country (read bloody cold) until we arrived at Brooms Head on the 24th May.

The scenery down some of the less travelled roads is astonishing as you cross the mountain ranges. If you ever get a chance, drive from Scone via Moonan Flat and Barrington Tops to Barrington. You will not be disappointed, but that was just one of the highlights travelling along the great divide from Canberra to Brooms Head.  Check out our MAP here for our fabulous route through NSW.

After a fabulous few days in Brooms Head we headed for Brisbane. It was now the 30th of May, we set up camp in a caravan park in Brisbane and the following morning did some shopping, then visited my brothers widow for a morning “cuppa” before heading for the Sunshine Coast, and in particular, Maroochydore. I had booked the cruiser in for a service the following morning, Friday June the 1st, the date that Harold and Di were due to take delivery of their new camper.

You “lookin” at me?

Parrot delighted with the blossoms in Brooms Head.

Naturally after the delivery of the camper there was a need to personalise the unit for heading into the bush. Also there was a need to finish off a few of the personal needs on the camper by the manufacturer. This along with one minor medical issue has kept us in Maroochydore until Wed afternoon the 6th June. As I write this it is the 5th June, the eve of our departure when we intend to head for Carnarvon Gorge.

That’s it for now, so till next when the real adventure will have truly started.

    Hi Graham!
I just saw today – June 5th!! – your email in which you announced the beginningo of your tour. Unfortunately, it went down in the spam section…
    Fantastic pictures, indeed.
It seems to be a beautiful journey.
Allan wrote me about some news from CSR: wet wet wet.
A lot of rain north of Wiluna, forcing people to a detour.
As for now, Sep 2019 seems to be the best option.
But now, Perc, you get focused on you trip.
Drive safely and make a toast to your 2017 CSR mates.
    All the best
    Cesare

Ah! Was wondering why I was not getting news of your travels, so tried Spam. There you were! All a bit of a nuisance, however, I shall go to Spam from now on and find you. I am so glad that you knew about that and let me know. Travel safely.
