The Kennedy Ranges are due east of Carnarvon through the Gascoyne Junction, a total distance of about 230km. A nice comfortable days drive. We had heard from a couple of mates that Wittenoom Gorge was worth a look and that it offered some excellent bush camping with the likelihood that there would not be many others in the gorge due to the dire warnings of blue asbestos being present in the rocks around the gorge.
